It is French Quarter Festival in New Orleans from Thursday through Sunday.  It is a free festival with food, music and events all around the French Quarter.  There are so many Festively Gay Things to Do this week both in and around the festival.  So pull out your calendars and check out a few of these.

Margarita Mondays: The DoublePlay Bar; 439 Dauphine Street

The drink special is $3 margaritas all day and night.

 

 

 

The Show: The Always Lounge; 2240 St. Claude Avenue; 10 p.m. – midnight

What is the show? It’s basically a talent show where the winner of the show wins $200 CASH — and your friends can help! How does it all work? THE SHOW is proudly produced by NEON Burgundy and co hosted by the one and only Siren.  There is a $10 cover.  You sign up at the bar the night of with NEON Burgundy. Sign ups will open at 9pm the night of and you must be signed up by show time at 10 p.m. 

All acts must be Solo Acts.  One can sing; dance; fake sing; drag; juggle; hula hoop; strip; do a comedy set; play a tambourine or any other musical instrument; sew a dress in a minute; do impersonations; read poetry; tap dance; rap; swallow swords; breed goldfish; and whatever else may be your talent. Also, if your act is greater than 5 minutes, it may be cut short by production. There will be a top three determined by the two hosts. At that point, it is left up to the audience (so you may wanna bring you posse.) The audience will applaud to determine the top winner of the night. The applause will be monitored by a decibel reader to ensure accuracy of the winner. Payment of $200 cash is made to the winner the night.

Southern Gothic Redux Opening: Severio Gallery; 834 Charters Street; 6 – 8 p.m. 

Southern Gothic Redux re-images race and gender in the latest collection of photographs by Arthur Severio and paintings by Andrew LaMar Hopkins . Severio’s new photographs take Tennessee Williams’ iconic characters to a new level, with Mme. Desiree Josephine DuPlantier as Violet Venable, the matriarch from Suddenly Last Summer, in the actual Garden District location that inspired the original play. Andrew LaMar Hopkins aka Mme Desiree Josephine DuPlantier will be showing his latest Louisiana colonial Gens de Couleur Libre paintings. Hopkins’ featured work is the Birth of the Creole Venus , a nod to the 15th century Botticelli masterpiece, is an allegorical depiction of the establishment of Louisiana’s culture.

Southern Gothic Redux was inspired by Bethany Bultman as she got to know Severio and Hopkins, two local performers, via the New Orleans Musician Clinic’s Dancer Wellness Program. She invited the two artists to use the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Fdn, Garden district headquarters as a backdrop for their artistic Tricentennial inspiration.  Southern Gothic Redux will be on display from Thursday April 11th – Thursday May 31st.

NOAGE Presents Coffee Talk – Mindfulness: New Orleans Healing Center; 2372 St. Claude; 10 – 11:30 a.m.

In Room #250 of the New Orleans Healing Center. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. The topic will be Mindfulness. Evidence supports the use of mindfulness to alleviate symptoms of a variety of mental and physical disorders, and many people find that mindfulness practice enriches their spiritual life.  The Moderator will be Rolf VanAnders. 

He is on the Wellness Committee at LSUHSC and have created a mindfulness training program called the Mindful Tiger which meets 32 times a month at various locations across our campus, the LSU Dental School, and the Ochsner- Kenner hospital. His mission Is to promote mindfulness and meditation training as a way to get in touch with our rich inner resources of wellness, healing and creativity, and to celebrate our quality of life as both individuals and community.

 

 

Southern Gothic Redux Artist Talk: Severio Gallery; 834 Charters Street; 1 p.m. 

The show will be opening April 11th and an artist talk with artists Andrew Lamar Hopkins and Arthur Severio. Mr. Hopkins and Mr. Severio will take place on the 14th with discussions of Andrew’s current and past work and Arthur will talk about his photos of Tennessee Williams characters portrayed in modern times by gender fluid people.

Funeral Gallery is thrilled to present a brand new solo exhibit Beautiful Broken Things by Art Doll rock star, Sheri Debow.  Sheri Debow is legendary in the strange and beautiful world of OOAK art dolls. She has been featured in many of the top outsider arts magazines including Beautiful Bizarre and Art Doll Quarterly. Her dolls are lovingly sculpted out of German polymer clay and dressed in delicate hand sewn costumes. Last year she was commissioned by NBC’s dark fantasy series “Grimm” to create two dolls that served as character representations of two of their cast members.  Sheri DeBow is an artist living in the Napa Valley. She studied Sculpture in California and has been a full time artist for over ten years. Her work has been featured in multiple Domestic & International Art, Fashion & craft magazines as well as on the cover. Sheri’s art dolls and sculptures can be seen in galleries across the U.S. & she now has pieces hanging in collections around the world.

Tony has received numerous awards for his outstanding achievements in the hospitality industry. Besides his professional career, Anthony has played an active role in the community.He has served Event Chair of Art Against AIDS for the No/Aids Task Force for the past ten years and was honored as Humanitarian of the Year in 2010 by the organization. He is also a freelance writer who has written for USA Today, as well as several local publications.He also writes a column regularly In Ambush Magazine, plus is part of Gambit’s Big Easy Theatre Committee.Tony is a social butterfly of New Orleans that not only knows how to put on a great event but also knows how to enjoy one.
