The world’s largest LGBT bartender competition and celebration returns for a fifth year of honoring our gay bars as original community centers and safe spaces and the LGBT bartenders who continue to Raise the Bar today!

Don’t miss the fun and opportunity to participate in this much-anticipated annual event in which you get to help decide which Bar Star wins the seven (7) day trip to magical Key West for the June 5-11 Pride Week Finale with a shot at from $2500 (second place) to $10,000 (first place) for their New Orleans area charity of choice ($20K total to be donated), the chance to become Honorary Grand Marshall of Key West Pride 2018, and a trip to either Vancouver Pride or San Diego Pride 2018, and even a Gay White Water Rafting Trip courtesy of HE Travel (second place winner). Champion: An Opera in Jazz: The Mahalia Jackson Theatre; 1419 Basin Street

The New Orleans Opera is pleased to announce the production of Champion: An Opera in Jazz by Terence Blanchard – native son, jazz trumpeter, band leader, composer, arranger, creator of film scores, and five-time Grammy award winner. Champion is the complex story of world champion welterweight boxer Emile Griffith, who asks: “What makes a man a man?” We travel through his broken memories as he retraces his steps to success and failure in love, life, and sport, as a champion and a gay man in the 1960s.   Champion was a co-production of Jazz St. Louis and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL), and premiered in June 2013. George Manahan, who conducted those performances, and James Robinson, both stage director and artistic director of OTSL, team up for New Orleans Opera’s new production. Arthur Woodley returns to our city to recreate his groundbreaking portrayal of Griffith, leading a stellar cast in this stunningly theatrical work.

One Eyed Jacks welcomes Alexis Michelle, one of the last queens left standing on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 9, in her new one woman show ALEXIS, I AM!  “Breathe in… I. Breathe out… Am.” This simple meditation has seen Alexis Michelle through the most exciting and challenging year of her career. From the exhilaration of being thrust into the reality tv spotlight to the struggles of the social media age, Alexis has lived it all and is stronger for it. Through a repertoire of songs made famous by divas like Liza, Judy, and Gaga as well as some of her own signature tunes, including “Thank You for Being a Friend”, Alexis shares the experiences that have challenged her and have made her brave enough to say “ALEXIS, I AM!”

Celebrated New Orleans singer Anais St. John joins Alexis as a special guest for this engagement.  Alexis, I Am! features music direction by Brandon James Gwinn. The evening is written and directed by James Will McBride. It is produced by James Will McBride, C. Patrick Gendusa, and Michael Benedetti. The evening will be co-presented by Fifi Mahony’s .
